A Clinical Study of Periproctal Abscess


Abstract
This is a report of 56 cases of periproctal abscess which were treated at EuI-Ji General Hospital from February 1978 to March 1983.
The results were as follows;
1) Of the 478 cases of anal disorders (except congenital malformations of anus), the peri-proctal abscess occupied 11.6% of all.
2) The ratio of male and female was 3: 1. And the disease was evenly distributed from 2nd to 5th decade, prevalent from 3rd to 4th decade in male and 2nd decade in female.
3) The onset before admission was mostly 6 to 10 days and 91.9% of all patients were admitted within 20 days after onset.
4) There was no seasonal variation of occurrence.
5) By the classification according to the site of origin, perianal abscess was 67.9%, high intermuscular abscess was 19.6%, ischiorectal abscess was 8.9%, other were 3.6%. And the predilection site of the abscess was in order of posterior, right, anterior, left quadrant.
6) Main subjective symptoms of the cases were pain, discharge and constipation in order. And E. coli was cultured in 32. 1%.
7) Commonly combined anal diseases were hemorrhoid, anal fistula, anal polyp and anal fissure.
8) Incision and drainage were performed in 92.4% and 39.4% of patients were taken concomittent operations.
